Hiking the Tristaina Lakes, Andorra

Andorra is a tiny country nestled in between France and Spain, to the south of the Pyrenees Mountains. The country consists of many mountains, and rivers that bisect the towns. The size of the place is so small; you could drive from one side to the other in a matter of hours. You would have a great time in the process, as the roads are so much fun, winding up and down, left, and right.

Due to the terrain, it is no surprise that Andorra is largely a skier’s paradise, with several large ski resorts dotted about. The mountainous landscape also offers great hiking opportunities, especially around the Tristaina region, up to the lakes. You can take several different hikes in the area, and around the lakes. I chose to hike all around the three lakes, taking in as much of the scenery as possible.

The walk starts you off at the foot of the mountain, where you ascend the rocky path until you reach the first lake. The walk takes you all around the edge of all three lakes, sometimes at high altitude, and reveals to you some incredible landscape scenery. If you are lucky, you can reach snow at the higher parts. The walk takes you very close to the edge at times, but if you are careful, and are sensible, you will have a great day.

The walk will take you three to four hours if you take the time to enjoy your surroundings, and will test your stamina at times, but it is a walk that anyone at any level can do, who is able.
