Decisions, decisions: after a day sunning on a sparsely populated white-sand beach, does one opt for a rejuvenating chaya herb salt scrub, sundowner tequila tasting, or quiet sail around a lagoon on a traditional lancha fishing boat, watching egrets flutter into the mangroves to roost? If you are staying at the Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico’s best beach resort, the answer is yes to all of it.

Spoilt for choice is one way to describe the winners of our 18th-annual World’s Best Awards survey. Voraciously vetted is another. Given that, our sunny, southern neighbor is America’s favorite tourist destination, we knew Travel + Leisure readers would have a lot to say on everything from rooms to restaurants to romantic possibilities.

Location is a huge factor not one of the properties on our list offers anything less than jaw-dropping scenery as was next-level amenities and intuitive, warm service, something the butlers at the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort (No. 3) provide in spades.

Mexico’s famous cuisine, acknowledged by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, also proved a big lure for travelers. Knockout all-inclusive resorts like the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit (No. 10) demonstrate just how far that much-maligned category has come, with restaurants celebrating cuisine both modern (veal osso bucco with mole) and classic. Esperanza resort (No. 4) in Los Cabos just plain celebrates, with a weekly music and fireworks show.

From Riviera Maya’s swaying palms and crystal-clear Caribbean waters to the dramatic desert climes of Baja, Mexico’s best beach resorts are calling. Time to answer.
It can be easy to let fitness go by the wayside when you travel. After all, isn't that what vacation is for taking a break from your normal routine? But staying fit on the road doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, it can be more fun than exercising at home thanks to all the hotel wellness programs and fitness-focused vacation packages available. Whether it is running, biking, stand-up paddle boarding or simply taking a walk through nature, here are five ways to incorporate exercise into your travels.

1. Take a guided run, walk or bike ride in a new city

Sure, you could hop on a sightseeing bus and drive around with a dozen other tourists. Or, you could see a city by bike, on foot or even as part of a running tour while a guide points out monuments and shares stories and fun facts along the way.

City Running Tours offers 3- to 6.5-mile group runs in major cities across the U.S., allowing travelers to sightsee in completely new ways. Each of the 16 cities currently hosting runs offer a variety of routes, often beginning or concluding at major attractions, such as Fenway Park in Boston or Pike Place Market in Seattle. In select cities, some runs end at local breweries, allowing you to quench your post-workout thirst with a free pint.

For bicycle tours, look to Bike and Roll, which offers two- to four-hour bike tours in major cities like San Francisco, Miami and Chicago. Tours range from $20 to $50 per person, depending on the city and the length of the ride. For a less expensive option, look to see if the city you are visiting offers a bike share program. You can rent a bike and tour at your own pace, and then drop the rental off at any bike share rack in town. Meanwhile, Free Tours by Foot is a great choice for those looking to explore at a slower pace. There are no upfront costs, but you are encouraged to tip the licensed guide.

2. Seek out an active vacation

Get out of the city and book an activity-focused outdoor adventure. Spend a week at Colorado's Keystone Resort, where in the winter you can downhill ski, snow tube, take free figure skating clinics or learn to snowshoe or cross-country ski. Or, try a Colorado River rafting adventure or a week riding horses at a dude ranch in Montana, if that's more your style.

For those who really want to work up a sweat, consider a Reebok Fitness Vacation by Austin Adventures. Offered in regions like Utah and Costa Rica, these organized trips take guests on mountain bike rides through forests and trail runs through canyons, making stops along the way for burped, push-ups and even yoga. Wellness-focused resorts like The Body Holiday, Leesport in St. Lucia are another option. Here, guests have the option to try out archery, windsurfing, fencing and golf. Traveling clans can sign up for Well Fit Families for beach boot camps, healthy cooking classes and even parent vs. child sport competitions.

3. Book a stay at an all-inclusive resort

When you know that all your expenses are included in your prepaid lodging rate, you are quicker to try out the various activities offered, such as kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and snorkeling. Leave your wallet in your room, grab some snorkeling gear and swim out to the reef for a look at the tropical fish.

At the all-inclusive Beaches Turks & Caicos, guests have access to a number of water sports like windsurfing, wakeboarding, snorkeling, paddle boarding and even hydro-bikes as part of their vacation packages. Even better, instructors are available to get you set up at no extra charge. Many all-inclusive in the Caribbean offer snorkeling and scuba excursions, too. If you would rather stay on land, ask about guided trail runs and nature walks around the resorts.

4. Plan a getaway around a race

If you like to run, whether it is 5Ks or half-marathons, find a race in a beautiful place and plan a mini vacation. If you can, plan to spend at least four or five days away so you have time to explore your destination both before and after the race. Check out Destination Races, which hosts half-marathons in wine country regions across the U.S., including Santa Barbara, California, and Loudoun County, Virginia.

For Disney fans, consider run Disney. The program, which hosts events at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, offers everything from Disney-themed kid’s races and family fun runs to multi-event competitions, such as the Dopey Challenge. During this four-day, 48.6-mile run, participants compete in four different events, earning a total of six medals for their efforts. You can also look for novelty races like The Color Run and the Electric Run, which are less competitive and are featured in a variety of cities across the U.S.

5. Look for fitness programs and lessons

It's easier to get in a workout when someone else is leading the way. Malliouhana Hotel & Spa in Anguilla offers a bevy of outdoor fitness programs, ranging from paddleboard and sunrise yoga to beach boot camp workouts. Meanwhile, Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys offers a selection of water sports, as well as tennis and kite boarding lessons and even diving and snorkeling programs that allow guests to swim with dolphins.

For West Coasters, a variety of resorts in Hawaii offer spa and fitness programs, including Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. Along with the on-site Laniwai Spa, daily staff-led programs range from morning walks and yoga on the beach to cycling classes and aquatic workouts. Guests can also pay extra to set up one-on-one sessions with personal trainers.

If you want a hotel, room that sits right on the beach in the Caribbean, St. John is not for you. However, if you want a beach all to yourself, there is no better place. With nearly two-thirds of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park, St. John has an undeveloped beauty and solitude that is rare among its built-up neighbors and the best way to explore it is by hugging its deserted coastline in a kayak. "Some of the spots are accessible only by boat or by hiking in," says captain Arthur Jones of Arawak Expeditions. "So you can get to beaches you wouldn't otherwise see."

Do not let the word expedition fool you kayaking here could not be easier, because you will spend about 20 percent of your time paddling and 80 percent swimming or lying on the beach under the shade of a palm tree. The national park covers 7,000 acres of St. John's 20 square miles, encompassing almost the entire north shore, a stretch of lush green forest with cove after cove of empty white sand beaches. A kayak trip all the way around the island takes four or five days, but you can also get a taste of that same solitude with easy day trips from the main town, Cruz Bay. This is not only where the ferry from St. Thomas drops you off, it is also, where you will find Arawak Expeditions. Grab one of its sit-on-top kayaks and within 30 minutes, you can be pulling into Salomon Beach, which no roads lead to, and a further 30 minutes will bring you to Henley Cay, a tiny island with some of the best snorkeling on the north shore.

For an even more unforgettable adventure, have Arawak shuttle you and your kayak 40 minutes away to Haulover Bay to begin a self-guided two-day trip back to Cruz Bay. The predominant east winds will blow you pretty much to your first night's destination, so do not rush it: Stop off at Brown Bay, the first hike-in-only beach you come to, and at Watermelon Cay, where you will want to snorkel around one of the most vibrant reefs on the island. From here, it is only two hours to either Cinnamon Bay, where you can camp or stay in a rustic cottage right on the water. Day 2 is just five more downwind miles back to Cruz Bay, but just before pulling your boat ashore for good, paddle right up to the exclusive Caneel Bay Resort for a late lunch and an umbrella drink. "It'll probably be the most expensive lunch you've ever had," says Jones. "But it's amazing, and you've earned it.

More information: Fly to St. Thomas on Delta, United, or American, and take the 45-minute ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you are on the island, haul your luggage up to The Fish Trap, a seafood bonanza not far from the docks. Order snapper if you really want to get in the swing of things. Ask the Rastas who work in the bay which of the island's small bars will be putting on a show. There is always a show.
Cabo Matapalo, on the southern tip of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, is a tiny outpost of rustic-but-romantic eco-lodges that sits within one of the largest untouched primary rainforests in the world. There is no downtown there is not even any pavement and there is no electricity, so when the sun goes down, the town is lit up with candlelight. "It's a little easier to get to these days," says expat Trevor Brown, who has lived in Costa Rica since 2009. "But it still feels like the end of the Earth."

Much of the Osa Peninsula was designated a national park in 1975, and it still feels like uncharted territory; scientists flock to observe rare species like the puma and the tapir, the largest mammal in Central America. Whether you stay in a safari tent at Rafiki Beach camp or in a bungalow at the Encanta la Vida, locals recommend stocking up on things like snacks, candles, and mosquito netting before you arrive. At night, everyone retires to his or her room or hammock as the man made world virtually disappears and the jungle comes alive with the roar of cicadas.

Wake up with a strong local brew and grab your board a 10-minute stroll down a muddy path is where you will find not only the best waves but also a thin crescent of sand that butts right up against the dense jungle. "And if you want to interact with the jungle on a more physical level," Brown says, "a local guide will take you to climb the huge trees or rappel down the King Louis waterfall."
Long before the invention of the swimming costume, men and women stripped to bathe, without a second thought. Many continue to do so today. Nothing could be more natural than facing the elements while naked, and there are plenty of wonderful beaches open to anyone ready to throw caution and everything else to the wind.

Apart from the lack of swimsuits, genuine nude beaches are no different from ordinary beaches in terms of what happens there. The experience hinges on the idea of being unencumbered by the trappings of the everyday, rather than on anything as tawdry as peeping at other bathers. In fact, the whole thing begins to feel normal extremely quickly, 15 minutes is adequate to adjust leaving first-time nude bathers to wonder what the big deal was all along. The big deal, it turns out, is the joy of being comfortable with your humanity in the face of public exposure. That universal appeal is probably why publicly accessible nude beaches are common throughout the world, with the exception of Asia, where laws forbidding public nudity have kept beach naturism largely at bay. Still, it may be a while until the East has a strand worthy of this list.

Whether you prefer the solitude of the wild and rugged California coastline or the camaraderie of a busy European resort beach, you only need your birthday suit to go to Mother Nature's party. Here are 18 beaches that stand out in the naked crowd.

South Africa is the most famous country in Africa. Economically, this country is by far much better compared to many other African countries. Mining of gold has played a major role in the economy of the country as well as its booming tourism industry. With a long history of apartheid, Nelson Mandela was the first black President but only ruled for one term due to his old age. Jacob Zuma is the current President. He made all African countries proud by hosting a peaceful World Cup Football meeting in 2010. The infrastructure in this country is excellent, allowing for favorable costs while hiring vehicles. You also get to enjoy smooth, comfortable, and fast rides.

South Africa is full of natural beauty, striking wilderness, beautiful cities, and a rich culture too. Cape Town is among the top holiday destinations that you must include in your list of places to visit. This town is situated along the ocean and has beautiful beaches and an impressive Table Mountain right in the heart of the city. The Table Mountain, which is about 1,086m high, is a popular highlight in Cape Town from where you can get a spectacular view of the city and the ocean. This mountain has more plant species on the mesa than the Great Britain. Apart from the natural beauty, the restaurants in the town are of excellent standards and offer very good wines. This town is also the favorite picnic area for the local people where they get to show off their culture to tourists.

Another top destination that you must visit is the Apartheid Museum located in Johannesburg. Opened in 2001, this is the most popular museum in South Africa where history dating back to the 17th century is on display. It is a museum, which offers emotional and disturbing experiences to both the old and the young generation. However, the construction of an isolation cell in the museum offers relief to all visitors since it explains how South Africa has changed since the time of apartheid. Soweto is another destination that you must not miss during your holiday in South Africa. Being the largest township in the country, it is located to the south of Johannesburg and is a home to about 3.5 million black people. Soweto is the place where much of the struggle against apartheid took place resulting in the deaths of hundreds of black people. The first home for the icon Nelson Mandela is also located in Soweto.
Looking for a beach honeymoon somewhere a little bit different? Why not try Africa? You will get a fantastic opportunity to combine your honeymoon with a safari if you wish, or you can just focus on the beaches and enjoy a less crowded experience. There are a number of benefits to honeymooning on the African continent itself rather than the nearby Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius, the Maldives, and the Seychelles. Here are the key advantages we would suggest:

Fewer people. The Indian Ocean is a very popular place for honeymooners and holidayer alike. In the up season, the resorts, restaurants, and activities will be crowded and teeming with people unless you are willing to pay a fortune for a villa of your own. Obviously, that is fine then; but fewer people choose to visit the African coast for their beach honeymoon without any real reason why. After all, the sand is equally white and the ocean is just as beautiful from the African side as it is from the islands.

Amazing resorts. Yes, there are incredible luxury resorts for your honeymoon all over the coasts of Africa. For example, Azura in Mozambique is an incredible destination for your honeymoon; it is Mozambique's first eco-resort and virtually guaranteed to provide you with all the pampering, luxury, and privacy you could ask for when going on your honeymoon. With an excellent spa, expansive villas, and private plunge or infinity pools, it is hard to fault Azura for your honeymoon. Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island, just off the coast of Zanzibar and only accessible by boat, is another incredible option for a week or two of luxury. Each room and suite is thatched with an incredible view of the Indian Ocean, and you will be able to go swimming and diving to your heart's content.
Get a holiday all-inclusive package and enjoy your vacation. You will love the array of activities set up like safaris, hot-air balloon flights, and kite surfing. Read on for some useful tips on how you can spend your vacation better.

One way you can spend your vacation is by booking a trip to a place you have never been to. Think big and exotic. You can spend time in Zanzibar and enjoy its landscapes and activities it has to offer. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean Leave all your worries behind and explore. Try new activities like kite surfing or going on a boat safari. Here are some activities you can enjoy in your trip:

Enjoy the View with Hot Air Balloons

Embark on a ride that will take you to great heights. Ride a hot air balloon in Zanzibar if you are planning to take a trip to East Africa. Flights take off when the dawn breaks, and you will have a clear view of the Serengeti. See the morning plains and look for wildebeest far below. You can see giraffes standing next to Acacia trees and other wildlife in their natural habitat. This package also includes a champagne breakfast.

Go Under the Sea with Diving and Snorkeling

This is perfect if you want to see colorful fishes, corals, and reefs. The coral reefs around Zanzibar and Mafia Island offer some of the world's finest scuba diving and snorkeling sites. You can choose to dive anytime you want although may want to hold off during June to September. It is during these months the Kusi monsoon comes and brings about strong currents that make exposed reefs inaccessible. Visibility is best from November to March just before long rains sets in.

Enjoy Extreme Sports like Kite surfing

This activity has become one of the most popular activities in Zanzibar. You will find many kite surfing centers along the east coast. This water sport is fun, addicting, and exhilarating. You can book sessions for beginners or advanced ones. Get a holiday all-inclusive package that makes the most out of the landscape of Zanzibar.

Enjoy Mountain Climbing

Kilimanjaro

Many visitors who go to this place often want to reach the peak of Kilimanjaro. Another mountain is Mt. Meru, one of Tanzania's volcanic peaks. This is popular because of the rich animal and plant life on its slopes. Meru is Africa's fifth highest peak, with breath-taking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes from the summit. You can try the challenging climb to the crater of Ol Donyo Lengai that shows some fantastic scenery. It is also here you get to see panoramic views of the Rift Valley. The track to the top of Lengai, meanwhile, is quite steep. This poses a challenge for expert climbers. Try looking for trails that are less challenging if you are a beginner.

Enjoying the Ride in Boat Safaris

Going on a boat safari is one way you can enjoy your stay. This is a tranquil and relaxing way of watching the wildlife. Boat safaris are one of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve. Sail into the chimp territory on a dhow past the fresh crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika. You can also travel up the Wami River in Saadani surrounded by birdlife, hippos, and crocodiles.
Having enjoyed all the touristy things we could find to do in Melbourne we set off driving west through Geelong onto the famous Great Ocean Road, which has some of the most amazing beaches and surf I've ever seen. The Twelve Apostles, which are spectacular limestone stacks along the shoreline, were a welcome excuse to stop and admire; although the best way to see these is probably by helicopter but our budget wasn't that rich. We also stopped at Port Fairy, with its historic buildings dating back to the 1840s, and took a very pleasant boat tour round the bay.

Having heard about The Grampians National Park and its awesome scenery including Mackenzie Falls, The Balconies, and various other lookouts we decided to leave the coast and head due north. There were dozens of them just eating away at the roadside grass. Insects are everywhere but that's expected and not so much a problem once you figure out what prevention measures best suit you; for me it's plenty vitamin B and copious amounts of Aero guard spray.

After a few essential camping equipment purchases we drove north through the Clare Valley stopping at four or five vineyards on the way. Our hilltop camp in Mount Remarkable National Park afforded us one of the finest sunsets I had ever seen, with the moon up before the sun was fully set.

We then loaded up with water and fuel at Port Augusta before following the Stuart Highway north to Coober Pedy, famous for its opal mining and eccentric characters that have been digging holes in the desert for as long as they can remember. We stayed the night in an underground campsite, completely equipped, even down to the red back spider in the TV room/cave. We took a tour of an old opal mine and learnt quite a bit, any thoughts of striking it rich overnight being rather deflated in the process.

We also enjoyed the next day's sunrise at Uluru, then climbed it, then walked 8km around the Olgas - quite an exhausting day under the Red Centre sun! Focusing as I am on the stops does not really convey the experience of a campervan road trip such as this. We drove literally thousands of kilometers, experienced wind that reminded me of an oven door being opened, paid nearly double the usual petrol prices, stopping at the highway's occasional roadhouses it is hard to convey the sense of freedom and exhilaration that is found on the open road in 'The Outback"

Retracing our steps back down the Stuart Highway, we set off again from Port Augusta heading west this time across the Null arbor Plain, surely one of the bleakest straight roads in the continent. We cut across the top of the Eyre Peninsula and camped in dunes by Streaky Bay. I went wading and collected shellfish bait for the people with fishing rods, one of whom promptly caught a two-foot fish, which we then cooked over the open fire. We also stopped off for lunch at Point Sinclair where the desert meets the sea. I enjoyed some great snorkeling off the pier, although I must admit I did find myself checking over my shoulder frequently, having been told by a local of the number of great white shark attacks that occurred the previous summer.

Once we reached the other side of the Null arbor, we followed the coast to Esperance, Albany, Margaret River all the way round to Perth. Some highlights of Western Australia include; a Tree Top Walk through the forest, a 61m vertical climb into a fire lookout tower, snorkeling with a stingray, a cave walk and several wine tasting tours.

My impression of Perth is all positive; it has very chilled out, spacious, unpolluted, sunny, and is close to some awesome beaches. The plan is to continue 'over the top' of Australia once the coffers have been replenished and before the wet arrives.

The best way to experience The Outback is to hire a campervan or even buy a motor home as you can then resell once your road trip of a lifetime is completed.
With a perennially warm climate, sea temperatures that rarely drop below 25°C, a culture that is steeped in historical intrigue and a wide range of activities on offer to suit all tastes, Mexico truly is one of the world’s most intriguing family holiday destinations.

A slice of luxury living

Finding the perfect accommodation is an integral part of planning any family holiday, especially when you are in search of something a little more luxurious. After all, with the huge range of activities on offer and Mayan landmarks to take in, you will want to make sure that you have somewhere that is truly relaxing to rest your weary head, to help ensure that you get the most out of each day of your holiday.

Cancún Yucatán

Club Med’s Cancún Yucatán resort, located in the northeast of Mexico, in the Yucatán Peninsula, is the perfect base from which to explore Mexico’s cultural delights and gain an insight into Mayan civilization.

Sandwiched between the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and an equally stunning lagoon, the Cancún Yucatán resort is endowed with a simply breathtaking white sand beach, which is the perfect place to top up your tan and relax as a family.

In addition to sea view suites and deluxe rooms with private balconies or gardens, the resort’s exclusive relaxation space, with a dedicated lounge and overflow pool, breakfast room service and concierge service are just some of the benefits that you can expect from Club Med’s luxury holidays in Mexico.

Ixtapa Pacific

If the proximity to the hustle and bustle of Cancún, as well as the opportunity to delve into the history of the Mayan civilization, does not appeal, Club Med’s Ixtapa Pacific resort offers families an altogether more relaxing environment.

Set against the striking Sierra Madre Mountains in southern Mexico, complete with a sweeping sandy beach and lush tropical gardens, the Ixtapa Pacific resort is for those families who like to take things at a slower pace.

Voted ‘Best Family Holiday’ by Trip Advisor, in 2013, there’s no shortage of activities on offer in and around the resort, but it’s the gardens of coconut palms, mango trees, bougainvillea and vast expanses of greenery that make it a truly peaceful base from which to explore the area’s natural wonders.

Immersing yourself in Mayan culture

Mayan culture is evident throughout the whole of Mexico. Some of the most intriguing sites, however, are best enjoyed from Club Med’s Cancún Yucatán resort.

A short trip from the resort, the pre-Columbian city of Chichen Itza, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven wonders of the modern world, was one of the main centerpieces of Mayan civilization from roughly 600 AD, right through to 1200 AD. The complex is filled with breathtaking temples and offers a deep insight into Mayan culture; it is a great day out that will leave children of any age utterly spellbound.

Whether it is a trip to Valladolid, a boat ride to nearby Isla Mujeres or a bus trip to further embrace the Mayan architecture of Tulum, the Yucatán Peninsula is teeming with cultural pursuits.

Exploring Mexico’s natural wonders

While both of Club Med’s resorts offer opportunities to appreciate Mexico’s natural beauty, the Ixtapa Pacific is the perfect base from which to really explore the ocean.

Half and full day trips aboard a Catamaran are excursions offered by the Ixtapa Pacific resort and are the best way admire Mexico’s truly breathtaking underwater scenery up close. Bursting with brightly colored fish and intricate networks of coral reef, snorkeling through the clear water will make for a truly unforgettable experience, creating memories that your family will cherish forever.

Something a little more active
Relaxing on white sand beach, sipping cocktails, dipping in and out of a good book, and watching your children playing happily on the beach may be an idyllic way to spend a family holiday for some, but, for those families looking to get a little more active, Mexico offers a wealth of adrenaline-fuelled opportunities.

From the Ixtapa Pacific resort, for example, families can enjoy a 10km bike ride, along the Playa Linda cycle track and through the Aztlan ecological park, where you can get your pulses truly racing by observing crocodiles in their natural habitat, in the Playa Linda lagoon.

A little bit of alone time

Both the Ixtapa Pacific and Cancún Yucatán resorts have their own dedicated kids’ clubs, organized for exactly this eventuality

Greece is a great destination for solo travelers. It is safe in most areas, the people are laid-back, street food is cheap and delicious where else can you grab a souvlaki pita for €2.50? and the sun shines far more than it does in Northern Europe, where I reside. Many airlines have direct flights from U.S. and European cities to Athens and Crete. Aegean and Olympic Air offer domestic flights from Athens to several islands.

Best of all, it is easy to island-hop via ferry, especially in the off-season, when there is no need for reservations. Traveling in mid-October, pensioners met me off the boat, eager to accommodate an independent traveler. They offered simple rooms with baths for €25 30 a fraction of July-August rates, when backpackers, sun-worshippers, and cruise travelers on port excursions flock to the islands.

After a day in Athens spent exploring the Acropolis and Monasteraki Flea Market, I hopped on a Metro to Piraeus, gateway to the Greek islands. After learning about The Mistral on Solo Traveler, I signed up for the weeklong photography course. Our instructor was as knowledgeable as he was affable, but of 15 students, only three of us seemed more than mildly interested in photography. While the hotel’s staff is gracious and the food outstanding and plentiful, I found myself with Brits who go back to The Mistral repeatedly there are direct flights to Heraklion from the UK, hesitant to venture out of their comfort zone on holiday. Not really for me, but I enjoyed the Greek menus and photo excursions to Chania, Rethymno, and Samaria Gorge.
In the weeks before and after Crete, I traveled independently with no problem. Pensioners were happy to accommodate a solo traveler and eager to please with amenities like free WiFi and view terraces. On Syros, the least commercial island I visited, I rented a whole apartment with bedroom, living room, kitchen, bath, and terrace for €25.

Wherever you go in Greece, there are a few cultural differences you will need to get used to. You cannot drink water from the tap, but the bottled stuff is cheap and readily available. In addition, you cannot throw paper down the toilet a custom that takes some getting used to for Westerners.

Relatively unheard of, Malta is actually a great place to spend a vacation or a few days off. It not only has the best coastlines and ports but Malta also has the best beaches from which you can conveniently choose. The best thing about Malta, however, is the archaic structures that predate even the Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt.

1. Excellent diving in Malta

If you are a diving enthusiast, then you must have already heard of the excellent diving opportunities in Malta. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, the waters in Malta are clear. Thus, it allows you to enjoy diving at its best.

2. Sandy and rocky beaches

Now, you do have a choice. A common connotation people have of beaches is that of a sandy one. In Malta, there are not only gorgeous sandy beaches but there are also rocky beaches, which are perfect for that romantic and warm moment you will want for your own benefit.

3. Megalithic monuments

These monuments in Malta are even older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt. There are about twenty-three Megalithic monuments in Malta. Scholars have argued as to why these monuments can be found in such a tiny piece of land, but the point is that these archaic structures are plentiful in Malta.

4. Medieval cathedrals and palaces

Baroque-inspired structures can be found in Malta. There are also those made by the Normans. If you take a visit to Malta, make sure to visit to at least one of these well-preserved structures, which are, until present time, being utilized by the citizens of Malta.

5. Valletta's limestone buildings

Valletta is the capital city and port of Malta. It is also, where you can enrich yourself with the culture of Malta, both through the atmosphere of the place and the congeniality of the people in it. In addition, the structures and houses in Valletta are mostly made of limestone, something that will strike you as architecturally wondrous.

6. Mnajdra Temple of Malta

Standing strong for over 6,000 years, the Mnjadra Temple remains to be one of the oldest structures that can be found in Malta. Giant and primeval stones were cobbled to form a structure similar to that of a temple. As to what utility it gave to scholars are still debating upon the ancient people.

7. Qala tad-Dwejra

Located in Gozo, Qala tad-Dwejra is a one of a kind beach. Whereas the usual first qualification most people seek in a beach is its waters, Qala tad-Dwejra offers so much more than that. Only the spectacular coastline reminiscent of the ones you only get to see in movies pairs the clear and refreshing waters of the beach.

8. Legendary Gozo

Gozo is one of the islands that make up Malta. Whereas most of the buildings in Valletta are made of limestone, the structures in Gozo are built on hills. This is something you will definitely not see just anywhere, as hills usually make for a fragile foundation of buildings, but somehow though the houses in Gozo still stand sturdy and strong.

9. Mosta Dome Church

The church is famous for two reasons. One, it is largely unsupported, something obvious through its design. Two, it survived against a potential total destruction during World War II when a bomb failed to explode - a miracle, as the people of Malta see it.

10. Ghotto of Ghar Dalam

Malta's oldest historic site is the Ghotto of Ghar Dalam. It is purportedly where the oldest person in Malta can be found, dating to as early as 4000 BC. You will practically feel the historicity of the place when you visit it.
Spain’s sunny summers make it a magnet for travelers seeking a laid-back relaxing holiday, but the country’s capital and largest city is no place for lazing about. Whether exploring the city’s world-class art museums, gazing at architectural marvels while sipping a café con leche at a sidewalk café or rollicking the night away at tapas bars along on the Gran Vía, the many attractions in Madrid are simply too captivating to miss. Fortunately, the city’s most popular destinations are centrally located. Visitors will not want to pass up the opportunity to see these top sights.

Museo Reina Sofia

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía was designed as a modern complement to the historical Prado Museum. Queen Sofia officially inaugurated it in 1992. Originally built as a hospital, the museum was expanded in 2005 with a structure designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The Museo Reina Sofia is home to a broad array of works created by Spanish artists, including extensive collections of artwork by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Picasso’s masterpiece, El Guernica, which conveys the horrors of World War II, is alone worth the price of admission.

Mercado de San Miguel

Situated within walking distance of the Plaza Mayor, the Mercado de San Miguel is a popular shopping destination for local foods and delicacies. Its intricate cast-iron architecture features glass walls that display goods ranging from salted fish and oysters to fresh pasta and cakes. Because the market stays open as late as 2 a.m. on weekends, it has become a popular nightspot where visitors and locals gather to enjoy drinks and tapas, or appetizers. The site also plays host to events like concerts, cooking classes and private parties.
Temple of Debod

The Temple of Debod is one of the most unusual sights in Parque Del Oeste, a park near the Royal Palace. The temple to the Egyptian goddess Isis once stood on the banks of the Nile. The construction of Egypt’s Great Dam of Aswan meant that several historical monuments had to be moved in order to preserve them from flooding. Spain stepped in to assist, and as an expression of gratitude, the Egyptian government gave the Temple of Debod to Spain in 1968. The four-thousand-year-old building is etched with bas-reliefs depicting the gods Ammon and Isis.

Plaza de Cibeles

One of the most beautiful plazas in Madrid the Plaza de Cibeles is surrounded by several buildings constructed in the Neo-Classical style, including the stunning Palacio de Cibeles, formerly known as the Palacio de Communications, which was designed by architect Antonio Palacios. At the center of the plaza, is a statue that is also considered a symbol of the city: the Fuente de la Cibeles? The magnificent fountain depicts the Roman goddess Cybele on a chariot drawn by lions. Sculpted in purple-colored marble by Francisco Gutiérrez and Roberto Michel in 1780, the fountain once served as a source of domestic water for nearby houses.

Puerta Del Sol

Located in the center of Madrid, the Puerta Del Sol, or Gate of the Sun, is a crossroads where thousands gather each New Year’s Eve to welcome in the New Year. Recent improvements to the square have limited car traffic and transformed the square into a spot where visitors can stroll and admire the architectural wonders. Central to these is the clock that chimes in the New Year at Casa de Correos, the city’s governmental headquarters. In front of the building is Kilometer Zero, a plaque showing the point where the measuring of the national highway system begins. The statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree standing on one side of Puerta Del Sol is considered a symbol of Madrid

Gran Via

The Gran Vía is known as the Broadway of Madrid because it’s “the street that never sleeps.” The grand boulevard runs through central Madrid from the Plaza de España to Calle de Alcalá. Although the street now seems integral to the bustling capital, it is actually a recent addition to the city. Completed in 1910, the Gran Vía is lined with hundreds of shops, restaurants, and businesses. The most famous building on the boulevard is the Telefónica Building, which was the tallest building in Europe when it was completed in 1929. The clock at the top of the Baroque-American style structure is a local landmark.

Retiro Park

Known as the Parque Del Buen Retiro or El Retiro, the park is a 350-acre spread of gardens, fountains and buildings located at the edge of the city center. Retiro Park began as a monastery in the 1500s. It was expanded into a royal park when Phillip II moved his court to Madrid in 1561. It has been part of the public domain since 1868. A favorite spot for tourists and locals alike, the park features a large artificial pond where people can rents kayaks and canoes. An arcing colonnade structure on the east shore is the Monument to Alfonso XII. The Paseo de la Argentina, known as the Statue Walk, is ornamented with statues from the Royal Palace depicting Spanish kings through the ages.

Prado Museum
The Museo Del Prado is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Madrid. The 18th century structure designed by architect Juan de Villanueva houses one of the world’s finest art collections. A 2007 expansion has made the famed museum easier to navigate. With more than 7,000 works of art representing culture and history from the 12th century to the early 19th century, however, it is impossible to see everything in a single visit. Visitors may wish to focus on the museum’s collection of Spanish artists, including Goya, El Greco, da Ribera, and Velázquez, which is inarguably the best collection of Spanish paintings in the world.

Plaza Mayor

The most famous of Madrid is many stately plazas, the Plaza Mayor dates back to 1619, when it lay outside the city’s bounds and was used to host bullfights. During the Spanish Inquisition, many accused heretics met their death there. Three sides of the rectangular cobblestone plaza area bordered by block-long rows of three-story apartments completed in the late 18th century. The structures are decorated with frescoes, ornamented with balconies framed with wrought-iron railings and topped with elegant slate spires. A statue of Philip III on horseback stands in the middle of the plaza. Facing the plaza is the Casa de la Panadería, which houses a tourist information center.

Palacio Real

The massive size of the Palacio Real is its most imposing feature. Madrid’s Royal Palace boasts more than 2,500 ornately decorated rooms. Built in 1764, the palace served as the royal residence beginning with Carlos III. The last royals to reside there were Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie in the early 1900s. Although the palace is still used for official ceremonies, 50 of the structure’s elegant rooms are open to the public, including an armory, pharmacy and the palace’s lavish throne room, or Salón Del Trono, which features a ceiling painted by the Baroque artist Tiepolo. A fresco in the grand dining hall depicts Christopher Columbus presenting gifts from the New World to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
If you are looking for some thrill seeking action, a South America vacation should be at the top of your travel list. Cheaper than Africa, more exotic than North America, and wilder than Europe, few continents can claim the diversity, accessibility, and abundance of gasp-inducing activities that South America offers. Here are several adventures to check out, if you dare.

Mount Roraima. Ever seen the movie UP? The wonderfully mysterious and majestic place the characters dream about visiting actually exists. It is in Venezuela and is called Mount Roraima. It is a remarkably massive plateau surrounded by 400-foot sheer drop-offs. Getting there is difficult and should only be attempted by the most adventurous traveler, as it requires a several day trek through misty mountains. In addition, of course, just traveling in Venezuela, regardless of where, can be challenging.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail trek is much more traveled than the trek to Mount Roraima, but that does not make it any less amazing. This trek follows the original path used by the Inca civilization to get to Machu Picchu, which back in the 1500s was an isolated retreat for Inca royalty. The high altitude requires at least a day to adjust to in Cuzco before setting off, and trekkers can choose to carry all their own supplies such as tent, sleeping bag, and equipment or hire a porter to carry them instead.

Biking in Bolivia. Despite being smack in the middle of the continent, Bolivia tends to be overlooked by travelers and tourists alike. This interesting highland country however has several hidden gems, especially for thrill seekers. Biking down what was once the World's Most Dangerous Road is of course exciting, but a bit safer today because most car and truck traffic now thankfully takes a different route. Visiting the salt flats in Bolivia is another unique experience, although biking across them is not recommended and would be nearly impossible.

Amazon adventuring. The Amazon covers parts of many countries, but the Amazon River runs primarily though Peru and Brazil. The most adventurous way to visit this region is to travel like the locals on slow moving riverboats. An Amazon cruise is the trip a lifetime, but if you are looking for something rougher and more affordable, hops on a local riverboat. You can opt for a journey anywhere from three to 15 days. Be sure to plan and pack proper supplies, because life on a riverboat is basic.
Walking Adventure in Africa are very popular and call tourists and adventurers from every part of the world. They are probably the best and perfect way one can spend a time that is full of pleasure exploring the natural wonders of wildlife. A well-planned vacation will offer you the opportunity to mingle with wildlife as you enjoy scenic beauty and have a feel of the African culture.

In normal circumstances, the safaris involve touring the different places using minivans and other strong vehicles although there are other available options for those who are adventurous enough and looking forward to making their safari experiences amazing.

One of the best ways you can choose to explore the wild is by engaging in walking adventures. The walking safaris are safe and adventurous as you will be in the able hands of a tour guide who knows the best trails and which ones to avoid while on foot. You can even choose to take a picnic break during your walking adventure as you enjoy the amazing African beauty. Only the brave hearted can manage to take the walking safaris as it means getting very close with wild animals some of which can be dangerous. The lurking danger is probably what makes the safaris the more adventurous.

Besides going for the walking safari, you can also choose to explore the world around sited on the back of an elephant! Although this is an option that might not be available in most places, it is definitely worth trying out where available for those looking for adventure and fun during their safari vacation. You will have the chance to get up close and candid with this amazing animal of the world besides enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Camels and horses are also used for the same meaning you will have different options to choose from according to what you feel is best.

Most people go on African Safaris for varying reasons. There are those who would rather have some private moments with friends and family in which case they can choose to drive them around without the assistance of a tour guide or travel group offering the services. In this case, one requires having a driving license to manage to hire a car for the safari.

The increasing numbers of travel companies however provides very good deals for travelers and you will find them more convenient especially if you are not too familiar with the grounds. The companies will also take care of your accommodation and sightseeing needs making your vacation hassle free.
Asia is the largest and most diverse continent of all, hence it is difficult to describe it in one word or consider it as one tourist destination. As you travel from the quaint villages in India to the stunning cityscape in Bangkok, Asia offers you a melting pot of different cultures, traditions, and languages. It is almost impossible to explore the whole of Asian in a single trip; you will need several trips in order to cover the thousands of amazing and diverse tourist destinations that include a plethora of beautiful villages, beaches, forests, modern cities, and so on.

Whether you are looking for a romantic vacation with your spouse, an adventurous trip to quench your adrenalin rush, a family holiday or a quiet break from the madding crowd, Asian tourist destinations have it all. The beautiful countries are infused with the best of both worlds and the tourists can see monuments that are reminiscent of the past while at the same time witness the remarkable skyscrapers that reflect the advancements made by the cities. This is the land where you will find the principles of Buddhism, teachings of Islam, deities of Hindu Gods, and the rules of Christianity. Wherever you go, you will find numerous temples and churches built by people of different faiths.

Besides the religious shade, Asia is also abounding with numerous ancient wonders and regions that speak volumes of the majestic dynasties that once ruled on earth. You can still see the palaces and historical monuments that stand as a testimony of the history and glorious eras. There are the picturesque temples of Angkor, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, and the various other lesser-known marvels in Afghanistan, Nepal, and Myanmar.

If you thought Asia was only about historic monuments and cultural attractions then you are mistaken because the modern side of the place will surprise you. Modern cities like Singapore and Hong Kong are considered as the fashion centers and they can easily challenge the bigger cities in America or Europe. The Asian cities boast vibrant nightlife replete with bars, discos, and nightclubs that are open over night. The full moon parties that are held every month in Koh Phangan have created news all over the world, and Asia has become a hot destination for those looking for fun and entertainment.
It is an incomparable experience. Being pampered at a spa in an exotic tropical country, with people waiting on you, bringing you soothing tea, massaging your tired muscles, and making you feel like a new person in ways you could never imagine, will be the highlight of your vacation-indeed, of your entire life.

What makes these rejuvenating treatments so refreshing is that many of the spa treatments, including therapeutic massage, are actually rooted in thousand-year old traditions that are highly spiritual, and often taught in Buddhist or Hindu temples far off in the misty mountainside regions of Southeast Asia. It is not just massaging a knot out of your shoulder-the spa treatments you will find here are for both body and mind. A few treatments really can change your whole outlook on life. It will make you want to quit your job and move to a tropical island.

A shock to the senses

If there were truly a Fountain of Youth, it would be in a place like Thailand, Bali, or Maldives, where exotic facial treatments bring out an inner glow and youthfulness that is like none other. Before you walk in the door though, you have to be prepared for what is to come. You will go from relaxation to shock, and maybe even a little pain, and then back to relaxation, and finally, bliss. In Thailand for example, traditional music, the washing of feet, and some soothing ginger tea usually accompany the traditional Thai massage. The massage starts out gentle but quickly goes deep-and do not let the little 90-pound woman administering the massage fool you. She possesses great strength that seems almost impossible for someone her size. Your masseuse will quickly sense exactly where your tense spots are and will go to work on them, and just when you think you cannot take it anymore, you will discover that you feel better than you ever have in your life.
The Balinese approach is quite different, but no less jarring. You will find a wide array of exfoliation treatments that use seaweed, coconut husks, sandalwood, and other abrasive materials, with techniques that often incorporate Eastern and Western techniques.

The Spa Experience

Your Asian vacation is all about you getting a little me time. Naturally, you will want to take time to sightsee, to shop, and to take in the local culture, but vacations can be frenzied. A week of unfettered tourism, however exciting, can be physically draining. There is no better way to balance that hectic activity with a weekend devoted to wellness, rejuvenation, meditation, and pampering.

The Asian approach to the spa experience is one of well-being. It is all about restoring balance in your life physically and mentally. What is more important is that your transformation need not stop when you go back home. When your vacation is over, you will retain a sense of well-being. During your stay, you will have glimpsed into a less stressful way of life that you can carry with you forever-or at least until your next trip to Asia. The spa treatment goes beyond the physical-you will learn something too, about healthy living and minimizing stress and you will get an opportunity to truly focus on what is most important in your life.
You are what you eat

A big part of any vacation is food, and the spa practitioners understand very well that what you eat will have a big impact on how you feel. Most Asian spa resorts will have a heavy focus on healthful and delicious foods. Even the smaller massage spots will highlight your experience with a hot cup of ginger tea, which has a remarkably healthful effect and is quite soothing. The weekend spas will delight your palate with a wide array of local fresh foods, tropical fruits, and expertly prepared meals designed not only to taste good, but also to enhance the healthful and rejuvenating experience. After all, enjoying the healthful spa treatments and following it up with a big fat fast-food burger defeats the point of the whole experience.

The foods will cleanse you and restore a healthful balance, and maybe even give you a few menu items to take back home. The exotic tropical fruits are a special treat-take time to savor the delicate, sweet flavors of the lichi, jackfruit, rambutan, and mangosteen. Many of these fruits have been used locally for hundreds of years for cleansing and healing. Even fruits that you are used to in the west, like pineapple, take on a completely different character in tropical Asia. A fresh pineapple, picked that day at the peak of ripeness, is sheer delight. You will never want a supermarket pineapple again.

Family-Friendly Spas

A spa weekend in Asia is by design self-indulgent, but it can be self-indulgent for the entire family. Large and comfortable family suites are widely available, many of the spas in prime resort towns feature plenty of family-friendly activities, and treatments designed especially for children and teens.
Take it home with you

Your Asian spa experience is not just, for the weekend-it can last you a lifetime. The treatments, massages, meditations, and organic foods you will be presented with will rejuvenate you, and you will walk away feeling more alive than ever. However, beyond that, when you go home you will have learned some things, too. Many of the spas also incorporate optional classes, so you can learn some of the basics of various meditation techniques, yoga, and healthful cooking. When you return home, you will be a different person-more relaxed, more knowledgeable, and less stressful. In addition, you can share a little bit of that with your friends.
